  • 44 B.C. – Roman dictator Julius Caesar was assassinated by Roman senators, including Brutus and Cassius, on the “Ides of March.” ​
  • 1493 – Christopher Columbus returned to Spain after his first voyage to the Americas. ​
  • 1820 – Maine was admitted as the 23rd state of the United States. ​
  • 1913 – U.S. President Woodrow Wilson held the first open presidential press conference. ​
  • 1951 – Iran nationalized its oil industry, leading to the Abadan Crisis. ​
  • 1965 – President Lyndon B. Johnson addressed a joint session of Congress, calling for new legislation to guarantee every American’s right to vote, leading to the Voting Rights Act of 1965. ​
  • 1972 – Francis Ford Coppola’s film “The Godfather” premiered in New York. ​
