  • 1521 – Portuguese navigator Ferdinand Magellan reaches the Philippines during his circumnavigation of the globe. ​
  • 1802 – U.S. President Thomas Jefferson signs legislation establishing the United States Military Academy at West Point. ​
  • 1861 – Edward Clark becomes Governor of Texas, replacing Sam Houston, who was evicted from office for refusing to take an oath of allegiance to the Confederacy. ​
  • 1926 – Robert Goddard launches the first liquid-fueled rocket in Auburn, Massachusetts. ​
  • 1935 – Adolf Hitler orders Germany to rearm in violation of the Treaty of Versailles. ​
