  • 1491 – Henry VIII is born in Greenwich, England; he would go on to found the Church of England.
  • 1838 – The coronation of Queen Victoria takes place in Westminster Abbey, London.
  • 1859 – The first conformation dog show is held in Newcastle upon Tyne, England.
  • 1880 – Tahiti is officially annexed by France.
  • 1914 – Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and his wife are assassinated in Sarajevo, sparking the outbreak of World War I.
  • 1919 – The Treaty of Versailles is signed, formally ending World War I.
  • 1926 – Mercedes-Benz is formed from the merger of Daimler and Benz.
  • 1950 – North Korean forces capture Seoul during the Korean War.
  • 1956 – Workers’ riots erupt in Poznań, Poland, protesting communist rule.
  • 1969 – The Stonewall riots begin in New York City, a catalyst for the LGBTQ+ rights movement.
