  • 1040 – Lady Godiva reportedly rides naked through Coventry to protest oppressive taxation.
  • 1212 – The most deadly of the Children’s Crusades ends in tragedy as many young crusaders are sold into slavery.
  • 1553 – Lady Jane Grey is proclaimed Queen of England following the death of Edward VI.
  • 1778 – France declares war on Great Britain, formally entering the American Revolutionary War.
  • 1890 – Wyoming is admitted as the 44th U.S. state, becoming the first to allow women the right to vote.
  • 1925 – The Scopes “Monkey” Trial begins in Tennessee, challenging the legality of teaching evolution in public schools.
  • 1940 – The Battle of Britain begins as Nazi Germany launches air attacks on the United Kingdom.
