  • 1789 – Storming of the Bastille in Paris marks the beginning of the French Revolution.
  • 1791 – The Champs de Mars massacre occurs in Paris during a demonstration against King Louis XVI.
  • 1853 – Opening of the first major U.S. world’s fair, the Exhibition of the Industry of All Nations in New York City.
  • 1881 – Outlaw Billy the Kid is shot and killed by Sheriff Pat Garrett in Fort Sumner, New Mexico.
  • 1933 – All political parties except the Nazi Party are banned in Germany.
  • 1943 – In the WWII Battle of Kursk, German forces begin to retreat, marking a major turning point on the Eastern Front.
  • 1958 – Iraqi King Faisal II is overthrown and killed in a military coup.
  • 1965 – NASA’s Mariner 4 becomes the first spacecraft to send close-up images of Mars.
  • 1969 – The United States’ $500, $1,000, $5,000, and $10,000 bills are officially withdrawn from circulation.
  • 1989 – Actor Laurence Olivier dies, widely regarded as one of the greatest stage and film actors of the 20th century.
