  • 1298 – Battle of Falkirk: English forces defeat William Wallace and the Scots.
  • 1499 – Battle of Dornach: Swiss forces defeat the Holy Roman Empire, securing Swiss independence.
  • 1793 – Alexander Mackenzie reaches the Pacific Ocean, completing the first recorded transcontinental crossing of North America north of Mexico.
  • 1796 – Cleveland, Ohio is founded by surveyors of the Connecticut Land Company.
  • 1933 – Wiley Post completes the first solo flight around the world in 7 days, 18 hours, and 49 minutes.
  • 1942 – The Holocaust: The deportation of Jews from the Warsaw Ghetto to Treblinka begins.
  • 1946 – King David Hotel bombing in Jerusalem by the Irgun kills 91 people.
  • 1951 – Dezik and Tsygan become the first dogs to make a sub-orbital flight and return alive.
  • 1972 – Venera 8 successfully transmits data from the surface of Venus back to Earth.
