  • 1297 – Battle of Stirling Bridge: Scots led by William Wallace and Andrew Moray defeat the English.
  • 1609 – Henry Hudson sails into Upper New York Bay, beginning his exploration of the river that will bear his name.
  • 1709 – Battle of Malplaquet, one of the 18th century’s bloodiest clashes, is fought during the War of the Spanish Succession.
  • 1789 – Alexander Hamilton takes the oath as the first U.S. Secretary of the Treasury.
  • 1814 – U.S. victory at the Battle of Lake Champlain (Plattsburgh) turns back a major British invasion in the War of 1812.
  • 1857 – Mountain Meadows Massacre culminates in Utah Territory.
  • 1906 – Gandhi launches the satyagraha (“truth-force”) movement at a mass meeting in Johannesburg.
  • 1941 – Ground is broken for the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia.
