  • 509 BC – The Temple of Jupiter Optimus Maximus is dedicated in Rome.
  • 1759 – Battle of the Plains of Abraham: the British defeat the French at Quebec.
  • 1814 – British bombardment of Fort McHenry begins, inspiring “The Star-Spangled Banner.”
  • 1847 – Battle of Chapultepec: U.S. troops storm Chapultepec Castle in Mexico City.
  • 1899 – In New York City, Henry H. Bliss is struck by an automobile—the first recorded U.S. pedestrian road fatality (he dies the next day).
  • 1922 – The Great Fire of Smyrna (İzmir) begins.
  • 1923 – General Miguel Primo de Rivera leads a coup d’état in Spain, establishing a military dictatorship.
  • 1940 – Italy invades Egypt from Libya during WWII.
  • 1956 – IBM ships the first hard-disk unit as part of the 305 RAMAC system.
