Today’s History

  • 1577 – English seaman Francis Drake sets sail from Plymouth with a small squadron on what will become his circumnavigation of the globe, signaling England’s bold challenge to Spanish and Portuguese sea power.
  • 1636 – The Massachusetts Bay Colony formally organizes three militia regiments, a step commemorated as the birth of the United States National Guard and the tradition of state citizen-soldiers.
  • 1642 – Dutch explorer Abel Tasman becomes the first recorded European to sight New Zealand, extending European knowledge of the Southern Hemisphere and Pacific.
  • 1769 – Dartmouth College is founded under a royal charter secured by Eleazar Wheelock, later becoming one of the nine colonial colleges established before the American Revolution.
  • 1862 – The Battle of Fredericksburg reaches its bloody climax in Virginia, where repeated Union assaults are repulsed by entrenched Confederate forces, handing Robert E. Lee one of his most one-sided victories.

  • 1996 – The U.N. Security Council selects Kofi Annan of Ghana as Secretary-General, making him the first sub-Saharan African to lead the organization.
