Today’s History:

  • 30 BC – Cleopatra VII, the last active ruler of Ptolemaic Egypt, dies in Alexandria following the defeat of her forces by Octavian.
  • 1099 – Crusader forces defeat a Fatimid Egyptian army at the Battle of Ascalon, generally considered the final major engagement of the First Crusade.
  • 1499 – The Battle of Zonchio begins between the Ottoman and Venetian fleets, one of the earliest naval battles in which cannons mounted aboard ships play a major role.
  • 1851 – Isaac Singer receives a U.S. patent for improvements to the sewing machine, helping make mechanized sewing commercially practical.
  • 1861 – Confederate forces win the Battle of Wilson’s Creek in Missouri, one of the first major battles fought west of the Mississippi River.
  • 1898 – The United States and Spain sign a peace protocol ending major hostilities in the Spanish-American War.
  • 1908 – The first Ford Motor Company Model T is assembled at the company’s Piquette Avenue Plant in Detroit ahead of full production later that year.
  • 1944 – Joseph P. Kennedy Jr., older brother of future President John F. Kennedy, is killed when his explosives-laden aircraft detonates during a secret World War II mission.
  • 1953 – The Soviet Union announces that it has successfully tested a thermonuclear weapon, escalating the nuclear arms race during the Cold War.
  • 1960 – NASA launches Echo 1A, the world’s first successful passive communications satellite, which reflects radio signals back to Earth.
  • 1981 – IBM introduces the IBM Personal Computer Model 5150, a landmark machine that helps establish the architecture of the modern PC industry.
  • 1990 – Sue Hendrickson discovers the fossilized remains of the Tyrannosaurus rex later nicknamed “Sue”, one of the largest and most complete T. rex specimens ever found.
