Today’s History:

  • 1521 – Spanish forces led by Hernán Cortés capture Tenochtitlan after a prolonged siege, bringing the Aztec Empire under Spanish control.
  • 1624 – French King Louis XIII appoints Cardinal Richelieu to his royal council, beginning Richelieu’s rise as one of France’s most powerful statesmen.
  • 1704 – Anglo-Dutch forces led by the Duke of Marlborough defeat a Franco-Bavarian army at the Battle of Blenheim, a major turning point in the War of the Spanish Succession.
  • 1792 – King Louis XVI and the French royal family are formally imprisoned during the French Revolution.
  • 1898 – American forces capture Manila during the Battle of Manila, effectively ending Spanish colonial rule in the Philippines.
  • 1918 – The first woman enlists in the United States Marine Corps when Opha May Johnson joins the Marine Corps Reserve.
  • 1942 – Walt Disney’s animated feature Bambi premieres at Radio City Music Hall in New York City.
  • 1961 – East German authorities begin sealing the border between East and West Berlin and constructing the Berlin Wall, which becomes the defining physical symbol of the Cold War.
  • 1969 – The Battle of the Bogside begins in Derry, Northern Ireland, escalating the conflict that becomes known as the Troubles.
  • 1997 – The animated television series South Park premieres, eventually becoming one of the longest-running scripted series in American television history.
  • 2004 – The opening ceremony of the 2004 Summer Olympics takes place in Athens, Greece, returning the modern Olympics to the country where the ancient Games originated.
  • 2020 – Israel and the United Arab Emirates announce an agreement to normalize diplomatic relations, an accord that becomes part of the broader Abraham Accords.
