Today’s History:

  • 1556 – Thomas Cranmer, the first Protestant archbishop of Canterbury, was burned at the stake for violating heresy laws revised under the Roman Catholic queen Mary I, known as Bloody Mary.
  • 1788 – The Great Fire of New Orleans, Louisiana begins. ​
  • 1857 – An earthquake hit Tokyo killing about 107,000. ​
  • 1871 – Journalist Henry Morton Stanley began his famous expedition to Africa to locate missing explorer David Livingstone. ​
  • 1918 – World War I: The first phase of the German spring offensive, Operation Michael, begins. ​
  • 1921 – The New Economic Policy is implemented by the Bolshevik Party in response to the economic failure as a result of war communism. ​
  • 1925 – The Butler Act prohibits the teaching of human evolution in Tennessee. ​
  • 1963 – Alcatraz Prison in San Francisco Bay closes down and transfers its last prisoners. ​
  • 1965 – American civil rights activists led by Martin Luther King, Jr., began a protest march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama. ​
  • 1980 – U.S. President Jimmy Carter announced that the United States was boycotting the Summer Olympics in Moscow to protest the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. ​
  • 2006 – Jack Dorsey sends the world’s first Twitter message, or tweet. ​
