  • 946 – King Edmund I of England is assassinated at Pucklechurch.
  • 1328 – Philip VI is crowned King of France, beginning the Valois dynasty.
  • 1868 – U.S. President Andrew Johnson narrowly avoids removal from office after the Senate falls one vote short in his impeachment trial.
  • 1896 – The Dow Jones Industrial Average is first published; the initial average is 40.94.
  • 1923 – The first 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race is held in France.
  • 1940 – Battle of Dunkirk begins during WWII as Allied troops begin evacuating from France.
  • 1969 – Apollo 10 returns to Earth after a successful lunar orbit mission, paving the way for Apollo 11.
  • 1972 – U.S. and Soviet Union sign SALT I treaty and the ABM Treaty in Moscow.
