  • 350 – Roman usurper Nepotianus proclaims himself Emperor in Rome.
  • 1621 – The Dutch West India Company receives a charter for trade and colonization in the Americas and West Africa.
  • 1889 – The first long-distance electric power transmission line in the U.S. is completed in Oregon.
  • 1937 – The Duke of Windsor (formerly King Edward VIII) marries Wallis Simpson in France.
  • 1940 – World War II: The evacuation of Allied forces from Dunkirk ends; over 338,000 troops are rescued.
  • 1943 – A race riot erupts in Los Angeles between U.S. servicemen and Mexican American youths, known as the Zoot Suit Riots.
  • 1959 – Singapore becomes a self-governing state within the British Empire.
  • 1965 – Ed White becomes the first American astronaut to walk in space during Gemini 4 mission.
