  • 1832 – Henry Schoolcraft discovers the source of the Mississippi River in Minnesota.
  • 1863 – New York City draft riots begin, protesting Civil War conscription laws.
  • 1878 – The Treaty of Berlin is signed, reorganizing the Balkans after the Russo-Turkish War.
  • 1923 – The Hollywood Sign is officially dedicated in the hills above Los Angeles (originally reading “Hollywoodland”).
  • 1930 – The first FIFA World Cup begins in Uruguay.
  • 1960 – John F. Kennedy is nominated for U.S. president at the Democratic National Convention.
