  • 1800 – Gabriel Prosser’s planned slave revolt in Richmond is thwarted by a severe storm and informants.
  • 1813 – Fort Mims massacre in present-day Alabama sparks the Creek War.
  • 1862 – American Civil War: Second Battle of Bull Run ends in a Confederate victory.
  • 1918 – Fanny Kaplan shoots Vladimir Lenin; Red Terror soon follows.
  • 1922 – Battle of Dumlupınar secures a decisive Turkish victory in the Greco-Turkish War (Victory Day in Turkey).
  • 1945 – British forces land to reoccupy Hong Kong, ending Japanese rule.
  • 1963 – The Moscow–Washington “hotline” goes into operation.
