  • 1905 – Russo-Japanese War ends with the Treaty of Portsmouth.
  • 1914 – First Battle of the Marne begins, halting the German advance on Paris.
  • 1939 – President Franklin D. Roosevelt proclaims U.S. neutrality at the outset of World War II.
