  • 1692 – The last eight executions of the Salem witch trials take place in Massachusetts.
  • 1776 – American spy Nathan Hale is executed by the British in New York City.
  • 1792 – The French First Republic is proclaimed; Year I of the French Revolutionary calendar begins.
  • 1862 – Abraham Lincoln issues the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation.
  • 1888 – The first issue of National Geographic magazine is published.
  • 1908 – Bulgaria declares independence from the Ottoman Empire.
  • 1914 – German U-boat U-9 sinks British cruisers Aboukir, Hogue, and Cressy in the North Sea.
  • 1960 – Mali gains independence from France.
  • 1961 – The Peace Corps is established in U.S. law.
  • 1975 – Sara Jane Moore attempts to assassinate President Gerald Ford in San Francisco.
