  • 1604 – Shakespeare’s “Othello” is first performed at Whitehall Palace in London.
  • 1755 – The Great Lisbon earthquake and tsunami devastate Portugal and parts of Spain and Morocco.
  • 1800 – President John Adams becomes the first U.S. president to reside in the White House.
  • 1911 – First aerial bombardment in warfare as Italy drops bombs on Ottoman forces in Libya.
  • 1918 – The Western Ukrainian People’s Republic is proclaimed in Lviv.
  • 1928 – Turkey formally adopts the Latin alphabet, replacing Ottoman Turkish script.
