  • 1632 – Thirty Years’ War: King Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden is killed at the Battle of Lützen.
  • 1860 – Abraham Lincoln is elected the 16th President of the United States.
  • 1861 – Jefferson Davis is elected President of the Confederate States of America.
  • 1928 – Herbert Hoover is elected the 31st President of the United States.
  • 1934 – U.S. midterms: Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Democrats expand control of Congress during the New Deal era.
  • 1947 – “Meet the Press” premieres on NBC, becoming the longest-running TV news program in U.S. history.
  • 1956 – Suez Crisis: A cease-fire takes effect, ending Anglo-French military operations in Egypt.
